The range upon which Pak Mei techniques are executed fall in between short and mid-range distances and never reaching an uncomfortable state that leaves the practitioner awkward and exposed. Hand movements are fast and poweful, and operate close to the body. When one hand moves, the other reacts simultaneously. When one defends, the other attacks. When one attacks, the other assists, the use of the fong ngan, or Phoenix eye fist which uses the first joint of the index finger against an opponent's vital points is extensive. but the system also employs the fist, grabs and serveral variations of an open-handed palm within its arsenal of techniques that seek to control or cease all of an opponent's movements. Elbows are used to cripple by (breaking the opponents bridge or arms) and to strike vital points in extreme cases of in-fighting.
The footwork moves in conjunction with rest of the body, but with its own agenda. The primary type of attacking footwork is called fu bo, or tiger stepping, in which the advancing stepping pattern enables the practitioner to requlate the range and method of attack. the stance is also designed to allow the legs to move with speed in any direction while power can still be generated in a split second decision. WHEN FIGHTING, YOU ARE NOT FIGHTING AGAINST THE STYLE YOU ARE FIGHTING AGAINST THE INDIVIDUAL.
